Simple Household Tasks

LEAP College have created a variety of resources, including instructional videos to enable young people to bake, make a cup of tea, prepare a simple meal and do their washing.

Making Scones

Download:

The learners complete a baking activity at home with parental support and guidance. Not only does this activity provide the gateway to completing EHCP and RARPA targets but learners consolidate their functional maths and English (e.g. reading, communication, counting out equipment and weighing quantities).

Top tips and key considerations

  • Parents/carers watch the tutorial video and pause it at convenient points to ensure that the activity is not overwhelming.
  • Visuals are provided for support.
  • Ensure that learners will have access to the common equipment and everyday ingredients that are required.
  • Emphasis is on health and safety and hygiene and will require a parent/carer for supervision and support.
  • Ensure that intolerances are taken into account and the scones be eaten by the learner and their family.

Doing Laundry

Download:

Learners are encouraged to follow along in operating the washing machine and hanging out the laundry.

Top tips and key considerations

  • Remember the aim is to increase the independence level of the young person, however, they may still need a level of supervision to do this.
  • Reinforce safety at all times. If they are turning on the wall switch ensure they know not to do this with dry hands.
  • Highlight why clothes need to be washed even if there is no visible sign that they are dirty.
  • Support to sort clothes by colour/light and darks or whites and coloured
  • Ensure all equipment is to hand prior to starting.
